Anambra Police Reiterates Ban on Osu and Other Caste-Based Discriminations

The Anambra State Police Command has once again emphasized its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the fundamental rights and dignity of every resident in the state. In a strong statement, the command issued a fresh warning against the enforcement of caste-based discrimination, particularly the age-old Osu practice, labeling such acts as barbaric, unlawful, and unconstitutional.

The police authorities highlighted that any form of caste segregation, whether through social exclusion, denial of privileges, or forced practices, directly violates the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. According to the police, such actions not only undermine the values of equality and justice but also threaten peaceful coexistence within communities.

The statement further stressed that no individual or group has the authority to impose discriminatory traditions on others, especially in a democratic society guided by the rule of law. The command reassured residents that the police will not hesitate to take decisive action against individuals or groups found guilty of promoting or enforcing caste-based restrictions.

Beyond condemning the Osu practice, the Anambra State Police Command encouraged residents to embrace inclusivity, tolerance, and respect for human rights. The enforcement agency maintained that upholding the dignity of every citizen remains one of its top priorities.

This renewed warning comes amid rising concerns that some communities in the South-East still practice forms of discrimination rooted in outdated cultural traditions. The police urged community leaders, stakeholders, and citizens to cooperate in ensuring that such harmful practices are completely eradicated from society.
