Hon. Azuka Kidnapped in Onitsha: Police Intensify Rescue Efforts
On Tuesday night, Hon. Justice Azuka, a representative of Onitsha North 1 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, was abducted by gunmen. The incident occurred along Ugwunaobankpa Road in Inland Town, Onitsha, as the lawmaker was returning home.
Hon. Azuka, a prominent Labour Party member, recently regained his mandate after the court annulled the victory of Hon. Douglas Egbuna from the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 elections.
Eyewitnesses reported that the kidnapping was swift, lasting under five minutes. The assailants ambushed Hon. Azuka at gunpoint and whisked him away in their vehicle.
A close associate of the lawmaker, speaking anonymously, disclosed that since the abduction, the kidnappers have not contacted the lawmaker’s family or associates, leaving his current location unknown.
Although details of the incident remain unclear, residents of the area expressed shock and called for Hon. Azuka’s immediate release. Many described him as a peaceful, grassroots politician who has maintained a close connection with his constituents.
One resident, identified as Okwuchukwu Odili, said, “Hon. Azuka is unlike other politicians who vanish after winning elections. He is approachable and always engages with the community.”
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the incident. Its spokesman, Superintendent Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that operational plans have been activated to locate and rescue the lawmaker.
Ikenga revealed, “Preliminary reports indicate that Hon. Azuka was abducted on December 24, 2024, around 9:20 PM. Investigations are ongoing, and we are following certain leads to ensure his safe rescue and apprehend the kidnappers.”
The police urged the public to remain calm and await further updates as they work tirelessly to resolve the situation.
