Africa has achieved a significant milestone in the film industry with the debut of its first artificial intelligence-powered feature film, Makemation, in Lagos. The visionary behind this innovative project, Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji, a human development expert-turned-filmmaker, expressed her excitement about the groundbreaking production that merges generative AI with live-action storytelling.

The Making of Makemation

During an exclusive interview with NollyNow following the film’s grand unveiling at Lagos House in Marina, Toyosi shared insights into the rigorous process of bringing Makemation to life. She revealed that the project took three years of dedicated research, production, and meticulous editing.

“The future is here, and technology is reshaping every aspect of our world. AI has been my chosen field of study for years, particularly during my PhD research on The Role of AI in National and Economic Security. I am deeply passionate about how artificial intelligence is revolutionizing industries globally,” she explained.

Toyosi emphasized the film’s unique blend of generative AI and live-action, highlighting its potential to elevate rather than replace traditional creativity in filmmaking. Makemation aims to showcase AI’s role in enhancing human ingenuity while addressing concerns about its ethical and creative implications.

With plans to develop Makemation into a six-episode series, Toyosi envisions the film as a transformative educational tool that will inspire young Nigerians and Africans to explore technology’s boundless opportunities.

“This film is a testament to our indigenous innovations. It represents the future of storytelling and is crafted to educate, inspire, and challenge conventional narratives about AI,” she stated.

A Star-Studded Cast and Compelling Themes

Featuring Nollywood icons such as Richard Mofe-Damijo, Tony Umez, Shaffy Bello, Ibrahim Chatta, Toyin Afolayan, and Ali Nuhu, Makemation delves into AI’s impact on real life, focusing on how young individuals use technology to address critical challenges. The film extends beyond entertainment, incorporating thought-provoking themes such as STEM education, digital skills, financial literacy, gender equality, and inclusive technology in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The production of Makemation commenced in June 2022, with principal photography beginning in 2023.

Additionally, a private stakeholders’ viewing is scheduled in Kenya ahead of its nationwide premiere on April 18, 2025.
