AFCON: Alex Iwobi Breaks Major Record Ahead of Nigeria vs Egypt Clash

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has reached a remarkable milestone ahead of Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) third-place playoff match against Egypt, scheduled for Saturday.

Statistics released by football data platform OptaJoe reveal that Iwobi currently leads all players in line-breaking passes at the ongoing AFCON tournament in Morocco. His progressive distribution has directly resulted in 13 goal attempts and four goals, underlining his influence in Nigeria’s attacking build-up.

Beyond his overall performance, the Fulham midfielder has also recorded the highest number of total line-breaking passes in the knockout stages, completing 44 successful passes that penetrated opposition defensive lines. This record places him above all other midfielders still active in the competition.

Iwobi’s consistent displays have been a major positive for the Super Eagles throughout the tournament. His ability to dictate tempo, link midfield with attack, and unlock compact defenses has made him a key figure in Nigeria’s campaign so far.

At 29 years old, Iwobi is now expected to play a leading role once again as Eric Chelle’s men prepare to face Egypt, with Nigeria aiming to end the tournament on a high note by securing third place.

However, the midfielder was unable to inspire victory in Nigeria’s semi-final encounter against host nation Morocco. The tightly contested match ended goalless after regulation time, before the Atlas Lions edged the Super Eagles 4–2 on penalties to book their place in the final.
