Abia and Imo States have officially unveiled a coordinated joint security task force and surveillance operation aimed at securing the Aba–Owerri expressway. This strategic collaboration stretches from Owerrinta in Abia State down to Owerri, the Imo State capital, forming a unified security belt designed to curb criminal activities.

This initiative emerged following a series of troubling incidents recorded along the route, including kidnappings, armed robbery attacks, and other violent crimes that have threatened the safety of travellers, residents, and business owners who use the busy expressway daily. The situation escalated in recent weeks, prompting both state governments to take decisive steps to reclaim peace and restore public confidence.

The announcement of the newly formed joint task force was delivered by Ferdinand Ekeoma, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti. According to Ekeoma, the collaborative security framework reflects the commitment of both governors to ensure the protection of lives and property across shared boundaries. He emphasized that the operation will involve enhanced surveillance, intelligence sharing, and coordinated patrols aimed at dismantling criminal hideouts and preventing further attacks.

The Aba–Owerri expressway serves as a major economic link between the two states, and insecurity along the corridor has disrupted transportation, trade, and general movement. With the introduction of this joint task force, authorities believe a more effective and proactive security structure will be sustained. The operation is also expected to complement ongoing security reforms already carried out by both state administrations.

Residents and commuters have expressed mixed reactions—some hopeful that this joint operation will bring lasting relief, while others urge the governments to maintain consistency and ensure that security personnel remain committed and properly monitored. Many also believe that collaboration between neighboring states is essential in tackling criminal networks that often operate across borders.

Both states reaffirmed that the joint effort is not temporary but part of a broader commitment to strengthen regional cooperation, promote peace, and protect economic activities. The launch marks a significant step forward in improving safety along one of the most important road networks in southeastern Nigeria.
