The Methodist Archbishop of the Okigwe Archdiocese in Imo State, Most Rev. Livinus Biereonwu Onuagha, has strongly criticized the life imprisonment sentence issued against the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, describing it as a deep error that falls short of every principle of justice and fairness.

The Archbishop expressed his disappointment while reacting to the ruling delivered by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja. He noted that the outcome of the case has intensified already widespread doubts regarding governance, transparency, and the credibility of Nigeria’s judicial structure.

According to Archbishop Onuagha, the judgment represents not only a legal setback but also a moral and ethical failure that continues to fuel national tension. He emphasized that such a ruling reinforces public mistrust in institutions that are expected to be neutral, fair, and committed to equity.

He further explained that the situation has created additional emotional, political, and social concerns, especially among citizens who believe that justice must be seen to reflect truth and accountability. The Archbishop maintained that decisions of this magnitude should promote national unity, not trigger deeper frustration or escalate doubts in the legal system.

In his remarks, the cleric stated that the ruling has contributed to growing public anxiety because many Nigerians view justice as selective, inconsistent, or influenced by political pressures. His reaction echoed a sentiment shared by a large number of citizens who feel that equitable legal judgment is essential for sustaining peace and national stability.

By describing the sentence as a grave misjudgement, the Archbishop stressed that the justice system must uphold integrity and impartiality to maintain trust. He urged the relevant authorities to reflect on the ruling’s implications and consider how it affects national cohesion and the people’s confidence in the courts.
