4 persons charged to court for alleged blackmailing, cyber stalking

Justice Ayokunle Faji of the Federal High Court in Lagos has mandated a swift trial for four bloggers accused of defamation and cyberstalking against the management of Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO) and its Group CEO, Mr. Segun Agbaje.

The defendants, identified as Precious Eze, Olawale Rotimi, Rowland Olonishuwa, and Seun Odunlami, face 10 revised charges for allegedly disseminating false information about GTCO through various social media outlets.

During the court session held on November 13th and 14th, Justice Faji denied the defendants’ bail requests, stressing the gravity of the allegations, which carry potential sentences of up to 14 years in prison.

The judge pointed out that Precious Eze had a record of similar misconduct and was on bail for a related case when the current alleged offence took place. This fact raised concerns about his likelihood of reoffending if granted bail.

Justice Faji also noted that such activities could have destabilizing consequences for the banking sector, especially as some of the charges pertain to cross-border online activities.
