A faction within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), known as PDP Frontliners, has cautioned that the ongoing internal battle against the party’s National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, could significantly weaken the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group expressed concern that rather than focusing on strengthening the party and preparing for the upcoming elections, internal conflicts and resource-draining battles were taking precedence. They alleged that certain factions within the party, planning to exit and form coalitions, were actively fueling disputes to destabilize the PDP before their departure.
In a statement released on Monday, Alhaji Hussein Mohammed (President), Moses Abidemi (Secretary), and Dan Okafor (Publicity Secretary) clarified that the Supreme Court’s ruling had reaffirmed Senator Anyanwu’s legitimacy as PDP National Secretary. They debunked claims suggesting that Hon. Sunday Udeh-Okoye had valid grounds to contest Anyanwu’s position, stating that such narratives were aimed at creating unnecessary confusion within the party.
Supreme Court Verdict on Anyanwu’s Leadership
The group emphasized that the Supreme Court’s decision invalidated previous judgments from lower courts, which had been used as justification for a meeting of 25 South East PDP stakeholders attempting to replace Senator Anyanwu. The ruling reaffirmed that leadership matters within a political party fall under the party’s internal jurisdiction and cannot be adjudicated by external courts.
Furthermore, the PDP Frontliners noted that Senator Anyanwu was not the first member of the PDP National Working Committee to temporarily step aside for state-level elections and return to office. They argued that this precedent had been set in the past and was in accordance with the party’s constitution.
Call for Party Unity
The group urged party members who were contemplating defection to exit peacefully instead of prolonging internal conflicts that could further destabilize the PDP. They reiterated that Senator Anyanwu has remained loyal to the PDP since 1999 and has never defected to another political party.
The Supreme Court, in Appeal No: SC/CV/18/2025, ruled that the case filed by Aniagu Emmanuel at the Enugu State High Court lacked jurisdiction, as it concerned an internal leadership matter within the PDP. The judgment effectively overturned the majority decision of the Court of Appeal and upheld the dissenting ruling by Hon. Justice Ekanem, JCA.
