2027 Presidency: Arewa Youth Urge Tinubu to Pick Northern Christian VP for Broader Support

1 minute, 49 seconds Read

The Arewa Youth Movement has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider a Northern Christian as his running mate for the upcoming 2027 presidential election, suggesting that such a move could bridge regional and religious divides that affected his previous campaign.

During a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, the group, led by its National President Ambassador Muhammed Sa’ad Aboki, emphasized the importance of religious and ethnic inclusivity in Nigeria’s electoral process. They argued that selecting a Christian vice-presidential candidate from the North could strengthen Tinubu’s political influence and correct the perceived imbalances that emerged during the 2023 general elections.

A Strategy to Enhance Political Unity

The Arewa Youth leaders believe that Tinubu remains a major contender in 2027 due to his control over the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his proven ability to forge strategic alliances. However, to ensure a wider national appeal, they recommend a more inclusive ticket that resonates with all Nigerians, particularly Northern Christians and voters in the Middle Belt region.

“Tinubu has the political structure and influence, but religious and ethnic balancing is key to victory in 2027,” said Aboki. “A Northern Christian VP would send a strong message of unity and demonstrate sensitivity to Nigeria’s religious diversity.”

Learning from the 2023 Election Outcome

The group highlighted Tinubu’s poor performance in regions like the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nasarawa, and Plateau States, all of which have significant Northern Christian populations. They argue that failing to include a Northern Christian on the ticket in 2023 alienated voters in those areas.

“Choosing a Northern Christian as his vice-presidential candidate would not only repair the shortcomings of the 2023 ticket but also build trust among marginalized communities,” Aboki added. “This move would act as a reconciliation gesture and could significantly boost Tinubu’s electability.”

This appeal aligns with a broader national call for inclusive governance and reflects the growing demand for equity in Nigeria’s leadership structure.
