The Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has called on the South East region to embrace strategic political engagement, emphasizing that the zone must position itself at the center of national decision-making. He noted with concern that Ndigbo have never been as politically fragmented and disconnected from federal power as in recent times.

Governor Mbah made these remarks while receiving the leadership and members of the City Boy Movement, a youth-driven movement backing President Bola Tinubu’s reelection bid, at the Government House in Enugu on Tuesday.

Reflecting on the political legacy of Ndigbo, Mbah stated that the people of the South East have historically been strategic in their politics, avoiding emotional or isolationist approaches. He stressed that marginalization in national affairs is no longer acceptable.

“Historically, our leaders were willing to extend a handshake across the Niger whenever the situation demanded it. The Igbo people have never relied on sentiment to drive political decisions. Strategy and foresight have always defined us, and it is crucial that this legacy is not eroded.

“Currently, we are absent from key national decision-making tables. Protocols place us far below where we rightfully belong. We should be represented by the Deputy Speaker, yet our influence is minimal. Our forebears never accepted a sidelines role, and it is encouraging that we are now trying to correct this.”

Governor Mbah further noted that while political fragmentation had previously hindered the South East, there are now signs of unity, with leaders increasingly coordinating on regional strategies.

He also praised President Tinubu’s economic policies, acknowledging initial challenges but highlighting their success in stabilizing the macroeconomic environment and reassuring foreign investors. The governor lauded Igbo entrepreneurs and young professionals who have actively engaged with the Tinubu administration, expressing optimism for the president’s reelection as the benefits of the Renewed Hope Agenda reach the populace.

“We must approach politics strategically—objectively and analytically—rather than relying on wishful thinking. Recognizing the current political reality is key to aligning ourselves with the winning team. With the Renewed Hope Agenda delivering results, Tinubu’s reelection is highly probable. Our focus should be to remain central to national politics, not marginal.”

Earlier, the South East Coordinator of the City Boy Movement, Obinna Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana, emphasized that past isolationist approaches caused the South East to lose political influence. He stressed that the region has learned valuable lessons on forming strategic alliances essential for future progress.

“The Igbo people have historically been a foundational pillar of Nigeria’s political and economic stability. Yet, other regions now succeed in presidential elections without Ndigbo support, highlighting the consequences of previous political strategies.

“As young professionals and entrepreneurs, we declare our unwavering support for President Tinubu’s reelection. It is vital that Ala Igbo is connected to national infrastructure, including gas, rail, and other central initiatives. We must build alliances today to ensure the Igbo can produce a future president.”

The State Director of the City Boy Movement, Prince Emeka Mammah, and the State Patron, Chief Charles Mbah, commended Governor Mbah for creating an enabling environment for the movement’s work through his transformative leadership in Enugu State. They pledged to mobilize support for landslide victories for both President Tinubu and Governor Mbah in upcoming elections.
