2027 Elections: Why Peter Obi Chose Enugu for His Historic Defection to ADC

Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), choosing Enugu State as the venue for this significant political move. According to Dr. Yunusa Tanko, leader of the Obidients Movement, the decision reflects the South-East’s desire to make a strong political statement that could influence the 2027 presidential elections.

In a conversation with Vanguard, Dr. Tanko explained that leaders and members of the Obidient Movement, who had actively supported Obi’s presidential campaign in 2023, were already in Enugu, the South-East zonal capital, in preparation for the defection. He emphasized that Obi had maintained ties with the ADC coalition prior to this event, and today’s gathering aims to chart a clear path forward for his numerous supporters nationwide.

When asked why Enugu was chosen over Awka, Anambra State, as the defection venue, Dr. Tanko remarked:

“Enugu is the historical capital of the East, providing historical and political significance when the region wants to make a statement.”

He further added:

“The event today is intended for Mr. Obi to outline the way forward for his large base of supporters across Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections. Leaders and members of the Obidient Movement are present in full strength to show their support. I have just left our movement headquarters, and the turnout is remarkable.”

A national leader of the ADC confirmed to Vanguard that top party leaders, including the National Chairman, would be present to formally welcome Peter Obi into the party. “We are thrilled about his arrival. National leaders of the ADC will be on hand to receive him,” he said.

The defection ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Nike Lake Hotel in Enugu, a venue known for hosting prominent political events in the South-East.

Earlier this week, Peter Obi reaffirmed his readiness to contest the 2027 presidential elections, asserting that he is well-prepared and determined to serve Nigerians at the highest level. His defection to the ADC marks a strategic move to consolidate support and broaden his political influence ahead of the forthcoming elections.
