As Nigeria looks toward the 2027 general elections, a coalition of former lawmakers from the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to end what they describe as longstanding marginalisation of CPC loyalists within the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The appeal was made during a press briefing on Wednesday in Abuja, where several key figures from the bloc expressed concerns over exclusion and underrepresentation in the ruling party.
Notable attendees included Senator Ibrahim Musa, Hon. Sanusi Aliyu, Hon. Mohammed Tukur, Senator Ahmed Sani, Hon. Ibrahim Chachangi, Hon. Yusuf Bala, and the APC North-West Vice Chairman, Hon. Garuba Datti.
CPC Loyalists Demand Recognition
Aliyu Gebi, a former member of the House of Representatives and a prominent voice in the forum, stated that despite being founding contributors to the APC’s formation, CPC stalwarts have faced systemic neglect.
“We cannot ignore the reality of our exclusion. We birthed the APC from the foundation of CPC, giving our time, resources, and energy. Yet, many of us have been left outside the power structure we helped to build,” Gebi lamented.
He pointed out the CPC’s ability to mobilize over 12 million votes in the past and criticized the influx of new party members who have bypassed foundational figures for influential roles.
“It is unacceptable that loyal party members are sidelined while opportunists and political profiteers gain prominence,” he added.
Gebi also underscored regional disparities, especially the neglect of the North-East, asserting that genuine representation is essential to democracy.
Al-Makura Recognized as CPC Leader
In his remarks, forum Chairman Basiru Ila reaffirmed that Senator Tanko Al-Makura, the former governor of Nasarawa State, remains the authentic leader of the CPC bloc within APC. He refuted claims recognizing former Attorney General Abubakar Malami as the CPC’s representative leader.
“Only one governor emerged from CPC – Senator Tanko Al-Makura. As such, we acknowledge and support him as our leader. Any other representation lacks legitimacy,” Ila declared.
The forum vowed to continue working under Al-Makura’s leadership to safeguard the ideals that led to the CPC-APC merger, promising to support the APC in meeting the hopes of Nigerians ahead of the 2027 polls.
