South Africa’s head coach, Hugo Broos, has emphasized that he would only introduce young players like Relebohile Mofokeng in matches against lower-ranked teams such as Lesotho, rather than high-intensity encounters like those against Nigeria.
Broos pointed out that selecting a young and inexperienced player in a crucial match against a formidable opponent like the Super Eagles could be too risky. He made these remarks following Bafana Bafana’s 2-0 victory over Lesotho in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Mofokeng’s Impressive Performance Against Lesotho
The Orlando Pirates forward was given his first full start for South Africa in the match against Lesotho. Before this, the 20-year-old had made five international appearances, all coming off the bench. His previous experience in competitive fixtures included being an unused substitute during South Africa’s 1-1 draw with Nigeria in Uyo back in June.
Mofokeng showcased his potential by constantly troubling Lesotho’s defense and sealing his performance with a well-taken goal in the 60th minute.
Broos Highlights the Risk of Playing Young Stars in Big Matches
During the post-match press conference, Broos elaborated on the challenges of integrating young players into crucial fixtures.
“I believe this was the perfect game for Rele to start. He delivered an outstanding performance, and that’s exactly what we need. As a coach, you must evaluate whether a young player is ready for such responsibility,” Broos explained.
“If he had a poor game, critics would argue that it was too soon or that he might not be good enough. You must protect young talents and introduce them at the right moment. Playing against Nigeria, or even in a high-stakes match in Benin, is a completely different scenario,” he added.
Nigeria vs. South Africa: A More Demanding Encounter
Broos’ comments highlight the vast difference in competition levels between teams like Lesotho and Nigeria. The Super Eagles, known for their strength, depth, and experience, present a much greater challenge. This is why South Africa’s coach is cautious when making team selections for such encounters.
