FIFA has firmly stated that the host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup cannot be influenced or altered by political leaders, including the President of the United States, Donald Trump.
This was made clear by Victor Montagliani, FIFA Vice-President and the President of CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football), during a sports conference held in London. Montagliani emphasized that the decision-making power regarding which cities will host the tournament belongs exclusively to FIFA and its organizing committees, not political figures or governments.
He went on to stress that FIFA maintains strict independence from political interference to ensure that global tournaments remain fair, transparent, and unbiased. The rules guiding the 2026 World Cup hosting process were established years before the tournament’s approval and will be followed without exceptions.
Montagliani further clarified that the United States, Canada, and Mexico — the three nations hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup — will all see games distributed across their selected host cities. Any attempt by a government, including that of President Trump, to shift games from one city to another would undermine FIFA’s regulations and the integrity of the event.
This statement comes as part of FIFA’s broader message to remind the world that international sporting events are not tools for political manipulation. With global anticipation already building for the tournament, FIFA reassured fans, football associations, and the host countries that preparations are progressing smoothly.
The 2026 World Cup will mark the first time in history that the tournament will be jointly hosted by three nations and will feature an expanded format with 48 participating teams.
