Yoruba Monarchs Strengthen Traditional Security Against Bandits
Faced with the increasing infiltration of bandits, Boko Haram, and ISWAP members in the South-West, Yoruba traditional rulers have activated ancestral security methods to protect their territories. Determined to prevent the region from becoming a safe haven for criminal elements, the monarchs are working closely with local authorities and communities.
Traditional Rulers Take Action
Traditional Support for Security – Deji of Akure
The Deji of Akureland, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi, who also serves as the Chairman of the Council of Chiefs in Ondo State, reaffirmed the commitment of Yoruba monarchs to enhancing security.
Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Michael Adeleye, he stated:
“The recent influx of bandits into some parts of the South-West, as highlighted by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, confirms that military efforts to flush out bandits across the country are yielding results. However, the South-West cannot serve as a refuge for displaced criminals.”
Oba Aladelusi emphasized that traditional leaders are actively collaborating with South-West governors, directing local chiefs and community heads to remain vigilant, particularly in forest reserves, to prevent unauthorized settlements by strangers.
Proactive Security Measures in Ekiti – Oba Faboro
The Chairman of the Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers, Oba Olori Faboro, dismissed exaggerated fears of bandit invasion, emphasizing that security measures are already in place.
“We have Amotekun security operatives and the Agro Marshall team patrolling our farmlands. Incidents of kidnapping have significantly declined over the past year. The police are also doing a commendable job in maintaining law and order,” he stated.
Government-Monarch Collaboration Essential – Orangun of Oke-Ila
Oba Adedokun Abolarin, the Orangun of Oke-Ila, called for continuous cooperation between the federal government and traditional rulers to tackle security challenges effectively.
“Traditional rulers must be actively engaged in security discussions. We live in rural areas, understand the terrain, and know the people. The government must leverage our knowledge to combat insecurity,” he emphasized.
Community Vigilance Groups Established – Okere of Sakiland
In Saki, Oyo State, the Okere of Sakiland, Oba Khalid Olabisi, highlighted efforts to enhance security by establishing local vigilance groups.
“Our communities have formed security groups to monitor and report suspicious activities. We also collaborate closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure rapid response to threats,” he revealed.
Constitution Limits Monarchs’ Powers – Eselu of Iselu Kingdom
Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom in Ogun State, lamented the constitutional limitations on traditional rulers in handling security matters.
“With the current Nigerian Constitution, traditional rulers lack the authority to take direct action against insecurity. The government must implement stronger policies to protect our communities,” he urged.

Yoruba monarchs are taking proactive steps to safeguard the South-West against the infiltration of bandits and insurgents. Through traditional surveillance, collaboration with security agencies, and community vigilance initiatives, they are reinforcing regional security.
