The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a strategic collaboration with China to domesticate the production of military equipment. This initiative aims to reduce the delays associated with relying on foreign supplies and ensure faster access to necessary defense tools.

During a joint press briefing at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, disclosed the partnership. Tuggar emphasized the importance of self-reliance in national security efforts, stating that foreign private military firms are not the solution to Nigeria’s security challenges. He highlighted Nigeria’s leadership role in maintaining peace across the African continent through strategic alliances with global powers, including China.

Nigeria-China Military Partnership
The collaboration will focus on both kinetic and non-kinetic military equipment production within Nigeria. Tuggar stressed the need for local manufacturing to avoid delays caused by extensive procurement processes from foreign sources. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to working under constitutional frameworks without expansionist ambitions, which has earned global trust in the country’s leadership.

China’s Perspective on the Partnership
Wang Yi expressed China’s support for Nigeria’s efforts, commending the strategic cooperation initiated under President Xi Jinping and President Bola Tinubu. He highlighted three key outcomes of the partnership:

Enhanced Bilateral Relations: China and Nigeria have elevated their diplomatic ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership.
Improved Cooperation Framework: The establishment of the Intergovernmental Committee has strengthened bilateral collaboration.
International Collaboration: Both countries have cooperated closely in global and regional matters, supporting the collective development of the Global South.

Wang Yi expressed optimism that the strengthened China-Nigeria relationship would continue to promote high-quality cooperation and contribute positively to Africa’s modernization.

Currency Swap Agreement
The Chinese Minister also addressed Nigeria’s proposal for a currency swap deal, expressing willingness to consider expanding the currency exchange agreement. He welcomed Nigeria’s plan to issue Panda Bonds in China, citing confidence in Nigeria’s financial credibility. The bond initiative, he noted, would provide Nigeria with secure revenue and financial support, particularly for infrastructure projects such as railway development.
