FG Allocates N112 Billion for Safe School Initiative

The Federal Government of Nigeria has earmarked N112 billion for the implementation of the National Plan for Financing Safe Schools. This initiative, spanning the next three years, aims to secure learning environments and advance children’s rights, according to the Minister for Women Affairs, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim.

In a statement marking Universal Children’s Day, themed “Advancing Children’s Rights for a Sustainable Future,” the minister highlighted the government’s strides in promoting the welfare and rights of children across the country.

Key Allocations and Achievements

1. Safe School Funding

• Over N112 billion has been allocated under the National Plan for Financing Safe Schools to ensure that schools remain secure and inclusive spaces for learning.

1. Child Rights Act Adoption

• All 36 states in Nigeria have adopted the Child Rights Act (CRA 2003), reinforcing the constitutional protection of children’s rights.

1. Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act

• The VAPP Act, 2015, has strengthened legal frameworks to protect children from violence, abuse, and exploitation, showcasing Nigeria’s commitment to child welfare.

1. Commitment to the Maputo Protocol

• Legislative reforms and enhanced child protection policies under the Maputo Protocol aim to combat violence and harmful practices affecting children.

A Vision for a Safe and Inclusive Future

Minister Suleiman-Ibrahim reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to creating a society where every child has access to quality education, healthcare, and a life free from fear or harm.

“The administration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is dedicated to fostering an environment that ensures children’s rights are respected and protected,” the minister stated.

Persistent Challenges and Call for Action

Despite these milestones, challenges such as child labour, trafficking, harmful cultural practices, and barriers to inclusive education remain. The minister called for collective action from stakeholders to address these issues and enhance the future of Nigerian children.

“Achieving a sustainable future requires the active involvement of all stakeholders to tackle persistent obstacles and create a safe, nurturing environment for every Nigerian child,” she added.
