US Deports 135 Migrants to Costa Rica Amid Global Repatriation Efforts

The United States deported 135 migrants of multiple nationalities, including 65 minors, to Costa Rica on Thursday, according to official reports from the Costa Rican government. The deportation flight, which left San Diego, California, landed at a facility adjacent to Juan Santamaria International Airport, confirmed by an AFP journalist.

Upon arrival, the deported individuals were transported by bus from the Costa Rican capital, San Jose, to a migrant facility located near the Panamanian border, approximately 360 kilometers (224 miles) away. The 65 minors aboard the flight were all accompanied by relatives, and according to Costa Rica’s Deputy Interior Minister, Omer Badilla, none of the deportees had a criminal record.

The group included individuals from Afghanistan, China, Iran, Russia, Armenia, Georgia, Vietnam, Jordan, Kazakhstan, and Ghana, reflecting the global nature of migration challenges. These migrants will remain in Costa Rica temporarily before being repatriated to their home countries or relocated to alternative host nations.

Costa Rica, alongside Panama and Guatemala, continues to collaborate with the United States on migration management, agreeing to temporarily house deported individuals until proper repatriation can occur. Just last week, Panama received 299 deported migrants, with around 100 of them being relocated to the San Vicente refugee camp in Meteti, located in Panama’s jungle-rich Darien province.

This coordinated effort highlights ongoing strategies by the US and Central American nations to manage migration flows while ensuring the humane treatment and safe repatriation of individuals, especially minors.
