LMSINT MEDIA has learned that the White House, under the guidance of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), has proposed a complete withdrawal of U.S. contributions to United Nations peacekeeping efforts. This move is part of a broader plan to dramatically cut funding for international diplomacy and aid.
Why the UN Peacekeeping Cuts Are Being Proposed
According to the OMB’s preliminary response to the U.S. State Department’s funding requests for the upcoming fiscal year (starting October 1), several UN peacekeeping missions have been deemed ineffective. Specific operations in Mali, Lebanon, and the Democratic Republic of Congo were highlighted for underperformance, prompting calls to eliminate funding.
“We are evaluating the effectiveness of all foreign engagements,” a senior budget official reportedly stated.

The U.S. Role in UN Peacekeeping Efforts
The United States remains the largest financial contributor to the United Nations. Currently, the U.S. provides:
- 22% of the UN’s $3.7 billion regular budget
- 27% of the $5.6 billion allocated for peacekeeping efforts
According to the United Nations official budget data, this funding is critical for global peace and stability initiatives in conflict zones.
Meanwhile, China follows the U.S. as the second-largest contributor, making the potential funding gap from the U.S. even more significant.
Internal Pushback and Legislative Approval Required
It’s important to note that this proposal is not final. The U.S. Congress, which has the constitutional authority to approve or reject federal budget plans, would need to review and vote on the proposal.
In fact, during Trump’s first term in office, he attempted similar budget cuts to U.S. diplomatic and foreign aid programs—about one-third at the time. However, Congress ultimately rejected many of those cuts.
Tammy Bruce, a spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, emphasized that no final decisions have been made, stating, “There is no finalized budget plan yet.”
The State Department’s official response to the OMB proposal was due on Tuesday.
