Tragedy And Triumph: FEMD's 2024 Report On Emergencies In FCT

The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has revealed that 105 lives were saved while four lives were tragically lost due to multiple building collapses across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in 2024. This was disclosed by the acting director-general, Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, during a press briefing in Abuja.

Key Locations Affected

The affected areas included Prince and Princess Estate, Guzape District, Garki 2, Kubwa, and Sabon Lugbe near Airport Road.

Engr. Mohammed provided a comprehensive review of the department’s emergency responses over the year, highlighting its critical interventions in building collapses, fire outbreaks, flooding, earth tremors, and relief distribution.

2024 Emergency Response Highlights

Building Collapses: FEMD rescued 105 individuals; sadly, four fatalities were recorded.
Floods: 75 lives were saved, although one life was lost at Angwan Hakimi, Orozo.
Fire Incidents: 1,230 people were rescued during various fires, with no casualties reported.
Road Accidents: FEMD rescued 89 individuals from traffic accidents, recording three fatalities.
Earth Tremors: Over 2,000 residents were affected in Mpape, Katampe, and Maitama Extension, with the report submitted to the Minister of the FCT.

Innovations in Disaster Management

Looking ahead, FEMD plans to enhance disaster management by:

Leveraging Technology: Introducing low Earth orbit satellites for real-time imagery and analytics to improve risk assessments and disaster monitoring.
Data Integration: Establishing secure data storage and communication channels for effective information sharing and collaboration.
Risk Mitigation: Strengthening risk assessment protocols in the city center to reduce disaster vulnerabilities.

Road Safety Campaign

As part of its Ember Month campaign, FEMD partnered with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to launch “Operation Eagle Eye,” an initiative designed to educate commercial drivers about safe driving practices in FCT motor parks.

Remarkable Rescues

Notable rescue operations included:

Averting an attempted suicide on a telecommunications mast at Katampe Hill.
Responding to fire emergencies at Old Karu Market, a fitness facility in Gwarinpa, and various residential areas.
