President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially launched the reconstruction of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Federal Highway, a critical transport corridor that serves as a key economic and mobility route for over 12 states across the North Central, North West, and North East regions of Nigeria.
This vital development project was flagged off during a formal event held in Jere, Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State, where the President was represented by Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State.

Described as the busiest road in Northern Nigeria and the second most trafficked highway nationwide after the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road is indispensable to Nigeria’s economy. Governor Uba Sani emphasized its socio-economic relevance, lamenting the long-term neglect that led to both tragic loss of lives and slowed economic development.
“This road is the artery of commerce and movement for millions in the North. Its revitalization is long overdue,” Governor Sani noted.
Project History: From Stagnation to Revival
Originally awarded to Julius Berger Plc during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, the project faced setbacks after the contract was later revoked. The current administration has now re-awarded the project to a new contractor with a fresh timeline and improved technical standards.
Though some segments had been completed previously, the project was nearly abandoned — until this renewed intervention under President Tinubu’s leadership.
Governor Uba Sani’s Advocacy and Security Improvements
Governor Sani, who previously served as Senator representing Kaduna Central, shared how he lobbied for the completion of the highway:
- Held town hall meetings
- Engaged with federal stakeholders
- Appealed directly to President Tinubu
One of the main obstacles to progress was the security situation along the Abuja-Kaduna corridor. However, thanks to the non-kinetic security approach and the Kaduna Peace Model, the road is now considered safe for motorists.
“Credit goes to the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, who coordinated security agencies to secure this route,” he added.
What to Expect: Concrete Roads, Faster Delivery
Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, stated that the 700-kilometre highway will be constructed using concrete-reinforced pavement and is expected to be completed within 14 months. Additionally, the project includes an 11-kilometre extension linking the Kano segment directly to Aminu Kano International Airport.
The quality will match that of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, ensuring durability and better road conditions for decades to come.
