Tinubu Says Poor Planning Caused Stampedes, Not Hunger President Bola Tinubu has stated that the recent stampedes at palliative distribution centers in Nigeria, which claimed over 60 lives, were due to poor planning rather than widespread hunger. Speaking during a media chat in Lagos on Monday evening, the President addressed criticism that these tragic incidents were a reflection of severe economic hardship under his administration. Tinubu pointed out that food insecurity exists globally, highlighting food banks in countries like the United States and the United Kingdom as evidence that hunger is not unique to Nigeria. Stampede Incidents: A Grim Overview Last week, three separate stampedes occurred during palliative distribution events in Oyo, Anambra, and Abuja. These incidents resulted in significant loss of life and injuries: These incidents have sparked widespread criticism, with opposition figures such as Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and Omoyele Sowore blaming government policies for exacerbating poverty and hunger. Tinubu’s Perspective In response to the events, President Tinubu attributed the stampedes to the lack of proper organization by event organizers. He cited his own experience in distributing palliatives, emphasizing the importance of structure and discipline in such efforts. “It is good to give,” Tinubu said, recounting how he has been distributing food and other items at his residence in Bourdillon for over 25 years without any such incidents. “If you know you don’t have enough to give, don’t publicize it or attempt to distribute it,” he advised. The President also drew comparisons to food distribution systems in developed nations, noting their organized nature. “In America and Britain, people queue and take turns to collect free food,” he explained, stressing the need for similar practices in Nigeria. Defending Economic Reforms During his first media chat since his inauguration in May 2023, Tinubu defended his administration’s economic policies, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira. He described these reforms as essential steps to address systemic corruption and foster long-term economic stability. Tinubu reiterated his commitment to implementing reforms despite the initial hardship they might cause. “I have no regrets about my decisions,” he said confidently.
