The communities of Enyigba and Ameka face severe lead-related illnesses due to consuming crops, fruits, tubers, and water contaminated by the toxic mineral. Many residents, despite being aware of the contamination, have no alternative but to consume these products due to limited resources.
Community leader, Chief Ewa Nworie, highlighted the toxic nature of the soil, which not only affects crop growth but also pollutes water sources such as rivers and streams. “Our water is polluted, and we rely on boreholes that dry up during the dry season,” he lamented.
Similarly, Mrs. Amauche Nwogha decried the poor health conditions affecting children, including skin infections and other illnesses linked to lead exposure. She emphasized the need for better healthcare facilities and safe drinking water in the area.
Neglect by Mining Companies and Lack of Awareness
Residents have expressed frustration over neglect by mining companies despite the royalties paid. Mr. Chike Nweke stressed that many villagers lack proper education on the dangers of lead exposure and called for government intervention to enforce agreements requiring mining companies to provide basic amenities like clean water, healthcare, and schools.
Academic and Medical Experts Warn of Health Risks
Professor Wilberforce Oti from Ebonyi State University revealed that 90% of crops grown in the region are contaminated with lead due to mining activities. He warned of the dangers to human health, especially for pregnant women, as lead can be absorbed and transferred to unborn children, causing birth defects.
Dr. Charles Akuma, a medical expert, explained how lead poisoning affects multiple body systems. Children are particularly vulnerable, with risks of central nervous system damage, while adults face cardiovascular issues, kidney damage, and reproductive problems.
Environmental Degradation and Solutions
The toxic effects of lead pollution have degraded the soil, making it acidic and unfit for healthy crop growth. Dr. Nnaemeka Eze of Ebonyi State University explained how lead sulfide affects soil stability and contaminates the food chain, emphasizing that shallow-rooted plants are particularly vulnerable.
To combat the crisis, experts have suggested phytoremediation, a method where specific plants are used to absorb toxic metals from the soil. However, there is still a need for government support and funding for more research and proper implementation.
Government’s Role and Challenges
The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Solid Mineral Development, Chidi Onyia, acknowledged the ongoing crisis but pointed out that mining licenses fall under the jurisdiction of the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals. Despite agreements requiring mining companies to provide essential amenities, enforcement has been lacking.
Governor Francis Nwifuru’s administration has vowed to ensure mining companies comply with these agreements before commencing operations. However, more stringent federal oversight is needed to protect affected communities.
