Ghana’s political atmosphere is heating up following the unexpected removal of Alhaji Said Sinare, a seasoned National Democratic Congress (NDC) politician, from a high-level ambassadorial shortlist. His replacement by his cousin, Kalsoume Sinare, a well-known Ghanaian actress, has sparked outrage and concern within the Council of State.
Alhaji Sinare, who has served as Ghana’s Ambassador to Egypt and Saudi Arabia, was initially part of the 22-person nomination list submitted to the Council last Thursday for final vetting. However, reports from The Broadcaster indicate that his name was removed at the last minute, causing unrest among political insiders.
This unexpected switch has been viewed by many within government and civil society as a major affront to party loyalty and competence. Said Sinare’s deep-rooted efforts in galvanizing support, particularly within Zongo communities, were instrumental in previous elections, including the 2016, 2020, and 2024 polls.
Council’s Internal Resistance
Insider sources reveal that members of the Council initially opposed the change, citing Alhaji Sinare’s political capital and decades-long service to the NDC. Despite these concerns, internal party dynamics and possible external influences overruled the push for his reinstatement.
Several observers have pointed fingers at political nepotism, warning that such decisions might alienate key party loyalists. The Zongo community, where Sinare holds significant sway, has reportedly been disheartened by this shift.
According to a report by Modern Ghana, political favoritism remains one of the most divisive issues within the NDC’s current structure.

The NDC leadership, including President John Mahama, is now under immense pressure to revisit the controversial decision. Party supporters across various constituencies have expressed dissatisfaction, with many warning that removing trusted figures like Alhaji Sinare could have long-term electoral consequences.
There’s growing concern that this act might not only damage internal unity but also dampen voter enthusiasm in critical regions where Zongo influence plays a strategic role.
