The Ogun State Government has launched a forward-thinking HIV/AIDS strategy designed to eliminate new infections and sustain care for individuals living with the virus. The new approach aligns with both state and national health goals, targeting zero transmission and improved access to lifelong treatment for people affected by the epidemic.
During a three-day stakeholder engagement forum held in Abeokuta, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker—represented by Dr. Tayo Lawal, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health—announced the rollout of the Ogun State HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan 2025–2027.
Dr. Coker highlighted a significant shift in funding patterns, noting a decline in donor support compared to the past, particularly during the World Bank’s peak involvement. “We can all see the declining financial input into the HIV response in Nigeria. It is time to galvanize a multi-sectoral commitment,” she stated.
The new HIV/AIDS plan emphasizes inclusive collaboration across government agencies, civil society, and private sector partners to strengthen HIV interventions and improve treatment outcomes. Dr. Coker stressed that the government alone cannot combat HIV/AIDS effectively without community-based support and stakeholder synergy.
Dr. Kehinde Fatungase, Executive Secretary of the Ogun State Agency for the Control of AIDS (OGSACA), also spoke at the event. He underscored the importance of creating a technically sound work plan tailored to the state’s unique needs, especially with limited external resources. “Despite a National Strategic Plan, Ogun requires a localized and resource-efficient approach to meet its HIV goals,” Dr. Fatungase said.
Stakeholders in attendance included representatives from the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), APIN Public Health Initiative, and the Civil Society Network on HIV/AIDS in Nigeria. All pledged their support in co-developing and implementing the plan, aiming for measurable results over the next two years.
As Ogun State takes this bold step, it reinforces the critical role of local governance and multi-sector participation in addressing public health challenges like HIV/AIDS.
