Nine-Year-Old Accidentally Sets Family House Ablaze In Kwara

A tragic fire incident in Ilorin, Kwara State, has left a family devastated after their three-bedroom flat at No. 52 Mandate Housing Estate was completely destroyed. The fire, which occurred on Thursday, was reportedly caused by a nine-year-old boy playing with matches.

How It Happened

The fire started when the boy lit a match, which accidentally set a mattress on fire. The flames quickly spread, engulfing the house in moments. The Kwara State Fire Service spokesperson, Hakeem Adekunle, confirmed the incident and emphasized the role of vigilance in preventing similar tragedies.

Adekunle recalled another heartbreaking incident in Ilorin last year. In that case, a child, attempting to hide a firecracker under a bed, inadvertently sparked a fire that consumed his family’s entire home.

“When the child heard his father’s car in the driveway, he panicked and lit a firecracker, tossing it under the bed to hide it. The family left the house shortly after, unaware of the smoldering fire. By the time they returned, their home was reduced to ashes,” Adekunle recounted.

Safety Precautions for Parents

These incidents highlight the importance of fire safety, especially during festive seasons when children often have more unsupervised time at home. Adekunle urged parents to take the following precautions:

Educate children about fire hazards: Teach kids about the dangers of matches, lighters, and firecrackers.
Keep flammable materials out of reach: Store matches, lighters, and other combustible items in secure places.
Supervise children during holidays: Ensure children are supervised, especially when home alone.

“As the festive season approaches, we must prioritize safety and educate children about the risks of firecrackers, commonly known as bangers,” Adekunle stressed.
