The Nigerian Federal Government has reiterated its dedication to ensuring that migration remains lawful and beneficial, prioritizing the safety and well-being of Nigerian migrants over economic advantages.
Government’s Stand on Legal Migration
During a meeting in Abuja, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, made this statement while hosting a delegation from the IHK Giessen-Friedberg Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Germany. The visit, facilitated by former Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed—now the Managing Partner of Bruit Costaud PR firm—centered on strategies to regulate labour migration and strengthen vocational training as a means of fostering economic growth.
Dingyadi stressed that the government is committed to encouraging only lawful migration, ensuring that Nigerians traveling abroad do so under legal frameworks that protect their rights while benefiting both Nigeria and host nations like Germany. He affirmed the government’s openness to partnerships that promote workforce development through skill acquisition programs.
Nigeria-Germany Collaboration on Vocational Training
The Minister acknowledged the importance of vocational education in creating job opportunities, stating that trained individuals who migrate often return to contribute to national development by sharing their expertise. He welcomed the IHK Giessen-Friedberg Chamber’s support, emphasizing that the Nigerian government would take necessary steps to enhance this collaboration.
Lai Mohammed, introducing the delegation, highlighted Germany’s long-standing partnership with Nigeria, noting that since 2012, the IHK Giessen-Friedberg Chamber has spearheaded the Dual Vocational Education Project. This initiative integrates theoretical learning with hands-on experience, mirroring Germany’s successful dual vocational training model. The project has already partnered with key institutions like the Abuja, Ogun, and Lagos Chambers of Commerce, strengthening Nigeria’s workforce development.
Language and Workforce Integration in Germany
Dr. Mathias Leder, President of the IHK Giessen-Friedberg Chamber, emphasized the crucial role of language proficiency in ensuring that Nigerian migrants integrate seamlessly into German society. He noted that a significant 98% of apprentices who complete the dual vocational training program successfully secure employment.
The Federal Government’s ongoing commitment to structured migration policies aims to ensure that Nigerians who seek opportunities abroad do so through legitimate channels that enhance their skills while safeguarding their rights.
