Through this initiative, eligible individuals undergoing radiotherapy will receive up to N400,000 in financial assistance, significantly improving access to essential oncology care. Speaking in Abuja, NHIA Director-General, Kelechi Ohiri, announced the subsidy as part of the agency’s commitment to making cancer treatment more accessible and affordable. This move aligns with the global observance of World Cancer Day, emphasizing the need for affordable cancer care. Addressing the High Cost of Radiotherapy in Nigeria Radiotherapy is a critical component of cancer treatment, especially for patients in advanced stages. However, the high cost often prevents many Nigerians from accessing it. To tackle this challenge, the NHIA is introducing a 50% subsidy, capping radiotherapy expenses at N400,000 per patient. To ensure seamless implementation, the NHIA is collaborating with multiple oncology centers nationwide. This partnership aims to: Expanding Coverage for Comprehensive Cancer Care Beyond radiotherapy, the NHIA is broadening its coverage to include comprehensive oncology services. Through its formal sector programme and the Group Individual and Family Social Health Insurance Programme (GIFSHIP), the agency provides access to several diagnostic and treatment services, such as: ✔ Tumor marker assays, MRI, CT scans, mammography, ultrasound, histology, and endoscopy✔ Oncology-related surgeries like mastectomies and prostatectomies✔ Cost-sharing for chemotherapy drugs, making treatment more affordable To further support cancer patients, the NHIA is working with pharmaceutical giants such as Roche Limited and Pfizer to introduce cost-sharing models for oncology medications. Over 200 patients across seven tertiary care centers have already benefited from this initiative. Building a Sustainable Cancer Care Infrastructure NHIA’s long-term goal is to establish a sustainable healthcare system for cancer care in Nigeria. This includes: ? Contracting service providers to offer comprehensive oncology services? Expanding access to advanced cancer diagnostics? Increasing the number of accredited oncology centers Former President of the Nigerian Cancer Society (NCS), Adamu Umar, praised the initiative, emphasizing that radiotherapy is vital for patients in advanced cancer stages. He highlighted that the NHIA’s cost-sharing model would significantly reduce the financial burden on patients and their families. “This initiative is a step in the right direction, and more patients must benefit from such programs,” Umar stated.
