NFSS Bill Will Bolster Tinubu’s Security Reforms – Osatimehin
The Nigerian Hunters and Forest Security Service (NHFSS) has emphasized that the approval of the Nigerian Forest Security Service (NFSS) Bill will significantly contribute to President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to enhancing national security.
Commander General of NFSS, Wole Joshua Osatimehin, expressed appreciation to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, for the National Assembly’s role in passing the bill. Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Osatimehin highlighted the bill’s significance in addressing long-standing security concerns in Nigeria’s forest regions.
A Landmark Step in Strengthening Forest Security
Osatimehin lauded the Senate’s decision, describing it as a milestone for Nigeria’s security framework under Tinubu’s leadership. He emphasized that the passage of the NFSS Bill aligns with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in tackling internal security threats in forested areas.
“This is a remarkable achievement for Nigeria’s security landscape. I extend my gratitude to the Nigerian Senate, under the leadership of Akpabio, for their unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property. Their decision to pass the Nigerian Forest Security Bill into law is a game-changer in the fight against insecurity.”
He further acknowledged the synergy between the executive and legislative arms of government, stating that such collaboration is essential for sustainable security policies.
Addressing Security Challenges in Nigeria’s Forests
Nigeria’s forests have long been vulnerable to criminal activities, including banditry and kidnapping. Osatimehin pointed out that the lack of security personnel in these regions has left many communities at risk.
“For years, farmers have been forced to pay ransoms just to access their farmlands due to the absence of security forces in these remote areas. The NFSS Bill will empower forest security personnel to gather local intelligence and work closely with law enforcement agencies to combat these threats.”
Nigeria currently has one of the lowest ratios of forest security personnel globally, with only 3.8% coverage compared to the recommended 25% minimum. This deficiency has left vast forested areas unprotected, allowing criminal activities to thrive.
How the NFSS Bill Will Improve National Security
With the NFSS Bill now passed into law, Osatimehin believes it will enhance the nation’s internal security framework by:
- Empowering forest security personnel to collaborate with law enforcement agencies.
- Boosting intelligence gathering in remote areas prone to criminal activities.
- Enhancing farmers’ safety and reducing incidents of ransom payments.
- Strengthening forest policing to meet global security standards.
