More NNPP Members Defect To APC In Kano As Kwankwasiyya Scholars Switch Allegiance

The political atmosphere in Kano State continues to evolve as two influential factions of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and the Kwankwasiyya Movement have shifted their allegiance to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Among the notable figures who defected were Hon Ahmad Yusuf Maidoki, a leading voice among Kwankwasiyya Scholars, and Hon Faruq Abdulrazak Musa, a former NNPP chairmanship hopeful for Tudun Wada Local Government Area.

The announcement came during a high-profile courtesy visit to Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, at his Abuja residence on Friday. The event was marked by the symbolic removal of the red caps—emblems of the Kwankwasiyya identity—signaling a complete break from the movement’s ideology and a public endorsement of APC’s agenda.

Why They Left the NNPP

According to Senator Barau, the defectors commended the APC for its development-driven policies and inclusive political culture. “They abandoned the red cap, symbolizing the Kwankwasiyya Movement, to join a party that genuinely cares about the growth of our people and our state,” he said.

Barau emphasized that the ongoing wave of defections reflects confidence in the APC’s governance, citing the party’s people-centered legislation and infrastructure projects as key attractors.

“The APC welcomes everyone. New members will enjoy the same rights and opportunities as existing members,” he reassured.

The Deputy Senate President further stated that while the NNPP previously enjoyed significant political presence in Kano, its influence has dwindled, especially outside the Kano Central Senatorial District. He highlighted that the Kano North zone has almost no NNPP representation and that more leaders in Kano South are on the verge of joining APC.
