Veteran Illinois lawmaker, Senator Dick Durbin, has officially declared he will not be seeking another term in the 2026 U.S. Senate elections, marking the end of a distinguished 44-year political career in Congress.
Durbin shared the news in a heartfelt video message released on Wednesday, stating it’s time for a new generation to step forward.
“In my heart, I know it’s time to pass the torch,” Durbin expressed. “The threats to our democracy and way of life are real, and I can assure you that I will do everything in my power to fight for Illinois and the future of our country every day of my remaining time in the Senate.”
Having been elected to the U.S. Senate in 1996 and serving since 1997, Durbin has maintained a strong presence in Washington, winning four successive re-election bids. Prior to the Senate, he served in the House of Representatives, accumulating a total of 44 years in federal legislative service.
At 80 years old, Durbin’s departure from the political stage is expected to trigger an intense Democratic primary contest in Illinois, as potential successors line up to claim the influential Senate seat.
