Lagos App-Based Drivers Suspend InDrive Over Security And Pricing Concerns

The Lagos State Council of the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON) has taken a decisive step by directing its members to suspend operations on the inDrive platform. The union cites security threats and exploitative fare policies as the primary reasons behind this action.

Security Risks and Driver Safety Concerns

In an official statement released on Wednesday, AUATON’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Steven Iwindoye, strongly criticized inDrive for its failure to implement adequate security measures, leading to an increase in attacks on drivers.

“The lack of proper rider verification on the platform has allowed criminals to impersonate passengers, ambush drivers, and, in some cases, claim their lives,” Iwindoye stated.

This growing safety issue has caused alarm within the ride-hailing community, as unverified users can easily exploit loopholes in the system, putting drivers at grave risk.

Unfair Fare Negotiation System

Aside from safety concerns, AUATON also took issue with inDrive’s pricing model, which allows passengers to dictate fares. The union argues that this structure often results in unreasonably low fares, making it difficult for drivers to cover their operational costs.

“With rising fuel prices, vehicle maintenance expenses, and other operational costs, drivers are struggling under an unfair system. Some passengers negotiate fares down by as much as 50%, making it nearly impossible for drivers to earn a sustainable income,” Iwindoye added.

AUATON’s Key Demands

The union has issued several demands to inDrive, urging the platform to:

Implement Stronger Security Measures: Establish a robust rider verification system to ensure only genuine passengers can book rides.
Introduce a Fair Fare Structure: Adjust pricing policies to reflect the rising cost of transportation and vehicle maintenance.
Improve Driver Support Systems: Develop a responsive customer support framework to address driver concerns promptly.
Recognize Driver Rights: Ensure that drivers receive equitable treatment within the platform’s policies.

Drivers Suspend inDrive Operations in Lagos

Until these demands are met, AUATON has instructed all its members to halt ride acceptance on inDrive, effectively disrupting its services across Lagos.

“We have directed our drivers to stop accepting rides from inDrive until significant reforms are enacted,” Iwindoye emphasized.

Calls for Government Intervention

AUATON is urging the Nigerian government and relevant regulatory agencies to step in and ensure that inDrive operates transparently while prioritizing driver welfare.

“inDrive must acknowledge that drivers are the backbone of their operations. Without us, the platform cannot function. We will not return until our safety, dignity, and financial well-being are secured,” Iwindoye concluded.
