Just In: bandits abduct 16 in Kebbi

Suspected armed bandits recently launched an attack on Bena village and nearby communities in the Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, leading to the abduction of at least 16 residents. The attack has heightened concerns about rising insecurity in the region, as bandits continue to target villages, disrupt agricultural activities, and instill fear among locals.

Lawali Umar, the Secretary of the Security Committee in Wasagu, confirmed the incident. He explained that the bandits strategically ambushed unsuspecting farmers as they worked on their guinea corn farms, taking advantage of the busy harvest season when farmers are often scattered across fields. “They lay in wait and struck while our people were focused on their farm work, capturing and taking them away,” Umar detailed. This method has become a common tactic, as bandits aim to take advantage of isolated workers in rural areas.

This recent incident follows another attack in the Tudun Wada area, where six people were also abducted. In both instances, bandits have demonstrated an unsettling degree of coordination, ambushing rural farmers and exploiting the limited security coverage in these vulnerable areas. In response to the ongoing threat, the Nigerian army engaged the bandits in a fierce gunfight, successfully repelling them and managing to rescue six of the abductees. However, many of the initially kidnapped individuals are still missing, with some managing to escape during the chaos, while about nine people remain in captivity. According to Umar, the kidnappers are demanding an undisclosed ransom, placing additional pressure on the families and the local government.

In light of these continued attacks, Umar has appealed to the Kebbi State Government to bolster security in particularly susceptible communities, especially Yar Maitaba, Mai Rai Rai, and Tungar Sabo. He described these locations as known bandit strongholds that would benefit from increased security measures, especially during peak agricultural seasons. “We appreciate the steps the state government has taken to combat banditry, but with the guinea corn harvest season upon us, our farmers urgently need better protection,” Umar stated, emphasizing the impact that these incidents have on the local agricultural economy and community morale.

As of the time of filing this report, Kebbi State Police Command spokesperson Nafiu Abubakar had not yet issued a statement regarding the incidents. The silence has sparked further discussion among local residents and advocacy groups, who are urging immediate action to safeguard rural communities. With attacks continuing to escalate, the people of Kebbi State are looking to both local and federal authorities to find a more permanent solution to the ongoing security crisis. The incidents highlight the complex security challenges faced in rural Nigeria, where communities are often left vulnerable to increasingly brazen attacks from organized criminal groups.
