Gunmen Attack Morai Village In Kebbi, Killing 13 Vigilante Members During Cattle Raid

In a tragic incident on Sunday, at least 13 vigilante members lost their lives during an attack by armed men suspected to be part of the Lakurawa terrorist group in Morai village, located in Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The attackers reportedly invaded the village with the intention of stealing cattle, prompting a swift response from local vigilantes who had received prior intelligence about the operation.

According to eyewitness reports, including statements from local resident Alhaji Augie, the vigilante group had attempted to ambush the gunmen by hiding in surrounding bushes. Unfortunately, they were unaware that the attackers had already taken strategic positions and had surrounded them.

“As soon as the vigilantes moved to engage, the terrorists opened heavy fire, killing at least 13 men instantly. Morai is only about three kilometers from our village,” Augie stated in a report published by Channels Television.

So far, six bodies have been retrieved and laid to rest in accordance with Islamic burial customs. Search operations are still ongoing to recover the remaining victims of the deadly ambush.

Efforts to get an official statement from the Kebbi State Police Command were unfruitful as their Public Relations Officer, Nafiu Abubakar, was unreachable at the time of this report.

This violent attack highlights the growing insecurity in northern Nigeria, where local vigilante groups often step in to protect their communities in the absence of robust state security infrastructure.
