Overview of the Crisis in Plateau State
In recent weeks, Plateau State has faced a series of deadly attacks across multiple communities, particularly within the Bokkos Local Government Area. These assaults have led to the tragic deaths of over 50 individuals, with thousands forced to flee their homes, leaving entire villages in ruins.
The Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, has now openly declared these violent incidents as sponsored acts of genocide, emphasizing the urgent need for national and international attention.
Governor Mutfwang’s Stand on the Violence
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Governor Mutfwang expressed deep concern about the targeted destruction of communities within the state. He firmly stated that the nature and coordination of the attacks suggest the involvement of terrorist networks backed by unnamed sponsors.
“I can tell you in all honesty that I cannot find any explanation other than genocide sponsored by terrorists,” he said.
The governor stressed the importance of holding the perpetrators and their financiers accountable, urging Nigerian security agencies to collaborate and dig deep into the roots of the violence.
“This is being sponsored from somewhere, and I am sure that in the coming days, the security agencies will work together – not at cross purposes but in unison – to be able to bring out the requisite intelligence,” Mutfwang added.
A Recurring Tragedy in Plateau State
This isn’t the first time Plateau has experienced such heinous assaults. For years, the state has remained a flashpoint of violent clashes, often linked to land disputes and conflicts between herders and farmers. However, according to Governor Mutfwang, the current wave of killings goes beyond resource disputes and clearly resembles organized terrorism.
The Need for National Security Collaboration
Governor Mutfwang has appealed for greater intelligence sharing, effective deployment of security forces, and international support in combating the rising terrorist threats in North-Central Nigeria. He believes that without identifying and neutralizing the sponsors, lasting peace cannot be achieved in the region.
