The Federal Government has officially launched an initiative to convert 10,000 commercial vehicles to operate on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) within a 10-week timeframe.
Announced by the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) via its X (formerly Twitter) account, the project is being dubbed the “10-for-10 Campaign” and is designed to modernize public transportation in major cities like Abuja and Lagos.
Campaign Timeline and Goals
The campaign kicked off on Thursday, January 16, 2025, and is scheduled to run until March 31, 2025.
Observers have praised this bold move as a step toward achieving a greener and more sustainable transportation system, addressing both rising fuel costs and environmental concerns.
What’s in It for Drivers?
Under the initiative, commercial vehicle operators can convert their vehicles to CNG systems free of charge. The benefits of these upgrades include:
- Lower fuel costs: Drivers will save significantly on fuel expenses.

The Road So Far: Key Achievements
In November 2024, the PCNGI reported a milestone achievement—over 100,000 vehicles in Nigeria have already been converted to CNG or bi-fuel systems.
The number of CNG conversion centers has also surged from just seven in 2023 to more than 140 centers by 2024, according to Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi, Project Director and CEO of the PCNGI.
“Investors have injected over $200 million into CNG infrastructure, creating thousands of jobs and driving economic growth,” Oluwagbemi stated.
Positive Response from Nigerians
The project has been widely embraced across the country as Nigerians see the value in switching to CNG-powered vehicles.
- Drivers report up to a 60% reduction in fuel expenses, making CNG an appealing alternative to petrol.
- Over 2,000 Nigerians are currently employed in CNG conversion centers, and this figure is expected to rise as more centers are established.
Investment in Infrastructure
Significant investments are being made to scale up infrastructure:
- Over ₦2 billion has been invested in conversion centers in the past year.
- Between ₦6 billion and ₦10 billion is earmarked for building an additional 1,000 conversion centers, a critical step in transforming Nigeria’s energy landscape.
Free Conversions Under the President’s Incentive Program
As part of the Presidential Conversion Incentive Programme, commercial vehicle conversions are being provided at no cost to drivers, further easing the transition to CNG and encouraging widespread adoption.
