FEC Approves $45.3 Million for Key Transportation Projects in Nigeria

This decision, announced on Monday, focuses on creating new route alignments that will connect four major western seaports to inland trade corridors. The Minister of Transportation, Sa’idu Alkali, disclosed this while addressing journalists after the FEC meeting led by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Key Transportation Routes to Be Linked The newly approved project is designed to establish efficient connectivity between: Boosting Economic Growth Through Transportation Alkali emphasized that transportation is a critical enabler of economic development and a priority under President Tinubu’s administration. He highlighted that the new project aims to:✔ Improve logistics efficiency for port operations✔ Strengthen connectivity between seaports and inland trade routes✔ Enhance GDP growth by facilitating trade and commerce✔ Modernize Nigeria’s transportation infrastructure Currently, only Apapa Port has a railway link via the Red Line. This includes a standard gauge rail at the APMT terminal, supporting freight movement from Lagos to Ibadan, along with a rehabilitated narrow gauge line connecting Lagos to Kano. The new project will integrate additional seaports into this network, further boosting Nigeria’s economic activities. Investment in Infrastructure Development The $45.3 million contract will cover the necessary feasibility studies and engineering designs, ensuring the project is well-structured for future implementation. Once completed, it is expected to enhance Nigeria’s port logistics, reduce congestion, and support long-term economic expansion.
