Tragic Loss: Cholera Claims Eight Lives in South Sudan Amid Aid Shortfall
At least eight people—including five young children—have tragically lost their lives during a desperate three-hour walk in scorching heat to find medical help. This heartbreaking event occurred in South Sudan after US-funded health services were scaled back due to budget cuts imposed by the US government.
The UK-based humanitarian organization, Save the Children, confirmed the deaths, stating that the individuals died last month while trying to reach the nearest operational medical center.
How US Aid Cuts Impacted Local Health Services
The cuts are a direct result of foreign aid reductions initiated by former US President Donald Trump, who had announced a review of international aid programs under his “America First” policy. These measures have led to the suspension of over 90% of USAID’s contracts, putting millions at risk due to insufficient medical support for malaria, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malnutrition.

Disruption of Health Facilities in Jonglei State
Prior to the budget cuts, Save the Children had supported 27 healthcare facilities in Jonglei State, Eastern South Sudan. However, due to the funding freeze:
- 7 health centers have shut down completely.
- 20 clinics are now operating at partial capacity.
- Transport services to the main hospitals were also halted, forcing patients to walk in nearly 40°C (104°F) conditions.
The tragic deaths are among the first directly linked to US aid withdrawal and serve as a stark warning of what may follow if international support continues to decline.

Public health experts have warned that if global assistance does not resume, the lives of millions—especially children and vulnerable populations—will hang in the balance.
