Nigerian Passport Renewal Goes Digital in Europe Following Canadian Success

The Nigerian government has expanded its Contact-less Passport Renewal System to Europe, enabling Nigerians in the diaspora to renew their passports entirely online. This initiative, spearheaded by Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior, marks a significant step in the digital transformation of government services.

Following a successful rollout in Canada, this scheme aims to eliminate the challenges associated with passport renewals by introducing a fully online process. Speaking at the launch, Tunji-Ojo described the move as a landmark achievement under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Seamless Passport Renewal for Nigerians Abroad

Eligible Nigerians residing in Canada and Europe can now complete their passport renewal applications from the comfort of their homes or offices.

“This initiative is designed to eliminate traditional bottlenecks, reduce long waiting periods, and enhance service delivery,” the minister stated.

According to Tunji-Ojo, the expansion of this service to Europe aligns with the Renewed Hope agenda, focusing on:

Efficiency – Enabling passport renewal without physical visits, significantly reducing processing times.

Accessibility – Ensuring Nigerians abroad can access essential government services seamlessly.

Modernization – Leveraging technology to improve citizen services, supporting Nigeria’s push toward a $1-trillion economy.

Strengthening Digital Public Services

Acknowledging the role of the Nigerian diaspora in national development, the government aims to provide seamless, professional, and efficient services.

“As we continue our commitment to transparency and security, this initiative represents only the beginning of broader reforms aimed at bringing government services closer to every Nigerian,” Tunji-Ojo assured.

The launch of the contact-less passport system in Europe signals a new era of digital governance, ensuring that Nigerian citizens, no matter their location, have access to efficient and modern public services.
