Vice President Kashim Shettima has stressed that Nigeria’s adoption of an autonomous transport system will position the country as a global leader in transportation. He made this statement during the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Summit held in Abuja.
Organized by the Chartered Institute of Transport Administration, the summit was themed “Intelligent Transport System – A Call to Action.”
Shettima highlighted that with Nigeria expected to become the world’s third most populous country by 2050, the implementation of intelligent and autonomous transportation systems is crucial to handle the anticipated increase in transportation demands.
The Federal Government, according to Shettima, is dedicated to cutting traffic congestion by 50%, underscoring Nigeria’s strategic importance in Africa’s future transportation framework.
He further emphasized the government’s plans to invest in intelligent transportation systems, particularly focusing on autonomous vehicles and data-driven infrastructure management.
“This moment offers a unique chance to reimagine our transportation systems, focusing not just on infrastructure and commerce, but also on the safety and well-being of our citizens,” he said.
Shettima described the summit as a turning point in redefining Nigeria’s transportation future, ensuring a safer and more efficient system for all Nigerians.
He added, “We envision a future where movement is safe, free, and efficient for all, whether in Lagos, Kano, or the Niger Delta. Achieving this requires the active participation of state governments, private sector leaders, and global partners.”
Acknowledging the nation’s significant transportation issues—such as road traffic accidents, overloaded trucks, and the risks to law enforcement—Shettima proposed innovative solutions.
He added, “Imagine a Nigeria where traffic congestion is reduced through real-time data, road safety is enhanced by automated compliance systems, and driver violations are seamlessly tracked through a unified database.”
Dr. Segun Obayendo, President and Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Transport Administration, also spoke at the summit. He underscored the importance of leveraging technology and innovation to tackle the transportation sector’s challenges.
The summit reinforced the government’s commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to reshape Nigeria’s transportation landscape, improving safety, efficiency, and economic growth.
