ABUJA – The Obi of Asaba, Professor Epiphany Azinge, SAN, has urged President Bola Tinubu to issue a formal apology to the people of Asaba over the tragic 1967 Asaba massacre.
During a courtesy visit to the President at the State House in Abuja, the traditional ruler also emphasized the urgent need for greater federal presence in Delta State, noting that Asaba remains the only Nigerian state capital without a federal university.
Call for Federal Recognition in Delta State
Addressing journalists after the meeting, the monarch underscored the significance of federal projects in Asaba and lamented the neglect in establishing higher education institutions.
“Asaba is the only state capital in Nigeria without a federal university. This is a major concern for our people, and we urge the federal government to address this oversight,” Prof. Azinge stated.
Recognition of Tinubu’s Governance Efforts
Despite the challenges facing Nigeria, the Obi of Asaba praised President Tinubu’s leadership, acknowledging his efforts toward national development.
“There are always difficulties in governing a country as complex as Nigeria, but overall, we rate him highly and pray for his success,” the monarch affirmed.
Demand for an Official Apology for the 1967 Massacre
A major highlight of the visit was the demand for an official apology for the 1967 Asaba massacre, where innocent civilians were killed during the Nigerian Civil War.
“Among other key issues, we reminded the President about the massacre and emphasized the need for an official acknowledgment and possible apology,” Prof. Azinge revealed.
Federal Development Projects in Delta State
The monarch also expressed gratitude for federal projects benefiting Delta State, particularly the construction of the access road to the Niger Bridge and the passage of a gas pipeline through Asaba and Awka.
“These projects are significant for the growth of our region, and we appreciate the federal government’s efforts,” he noted.
Tinubu’s Planned Visit to Asaba
The visit also served as an appreciation and solidarity gesture, with the President expressing his commitment to visiting Asaba during his next trip to the South-South region.
“He welcomed our visit and assured us that Asaba is on his itinerary for an upcoming South-South tour,” Prof. Azinge concluded.
