Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Claims Akpabio Influenced Judge’s Exit from Her Case
Suspended Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of obstructing her legal challenge against her suspension. According to Natasha, Akpabio influenced the recusal of Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Abuja Federal High Court, who was handling the case.
Allegations Against Akpabio
Natasha stated that Akpabio filed petitions with both the National Judicial Council (NJC) and the Department of State Services (DSS) against Justice Egwuatu, which ultimately pressured the judge into stepping down.
Justice Egwuatu had previously issued an interim order on March 4 that temporarily halted the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions from taking disciplinary action against Akpoti-Uduaghan. However, he later withdrew from the case.
Natasha’s Reaction to the Judge’s Recusal
Speaking in her hometown, Okehi, Kogi State, Natasha expressed disappointment over the judge’s withdrawal. She explained:
“Justice Egwuatu was set to review all pleadings and make a decision, which I strongly believe would have been in our favor. This could have resulted in the suspension being overturned, allowing me to return to the Senate.”
She further alleged that Akpabio’s petition was strategically aimed at pressuring the judge, stating:
“As soon as the case was assigned to him, the Senate President petitioned the NJC and DSS against him. This is a clear attempt to obstruct justice.”
Natasha also suggested that some judges face undue influence and intimidation, making it difficult for them to rule impartially:
“Although the judiciary has its flaws, there are still good judges. Unfortunately, many of them face harassment to comply with corrupt demands.”
Political Implications and Legal Standpoint
The situation raises concerns about judicial independence in Nigeria. If political leaders can influence judicial processes through petitions, it could erode public trust in the legal system. Legal analysts suggest that Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan may seek alternative legal remedies to challenge her suspension despite these setbacks.
