The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has issued a stern warning to all chairmen of Senate standing committees, emphasizing that underperformance will not be tolerated. He made it clear that committee leaders who fail to deliver on their mandates may be replaced to ensure effective oversight and legislative accountability.

Senate Oversight on Revenue-Generating Agencies

Senator Akpabio’s remarks came in response to concerns raised by Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central) regarding the Senate Committee on Finance’s failure to perform oversight on 92 revenue-generating agencies. Akpabio expressed dissatisfaction with how some Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) have continued to disregard Senate invitations, highlighting the urgent need for committees to assert their authority.

“If any committee finds it difficult to oversee its assigned agencies, we will not hesitate to restructure and appoint capable individuals who can deliver results for the benefit of democracy,” Akpabio stated.

Deadline for Committee Oversight Reports

To enhance accountability, Akpabio has directed all committee chairmen to submit detailed oversight activity reports by January 31, 2025. These reports will help identify challenges and assess the performance of the committees in addressing critical national issues.

Enforcing Legislative Powers

Senator Akpabio reminded lawmakers of their constitutional authority to issue warrants of arrest against uncooperative MDA heads. He stressed the importance of committees exercising their oversight powers effectively.

“Our constitution empowers us to summon and demand accountability from MDAs. Any committee that overlooks non-compliance indirectly allows such agencies to disregard their legislative obligations, turning negligence into a norm,” Akpabio warned.

With over 70 standing committees in the Senate, each composed of a chairman, vice-chairman, and members, these committees play a critical role in ensuring the effective functioning of government agencies.
