The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that the much-anticipated Abuja-Kano dual carriageway will be completed within the next 14 months. This commitment was reiterated by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who attributed the fast-tracking of the project to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering dedication to timely infrastructural development.
Speaking on Thursday during an inspection visit to the project site in Tafa, Niger State, the Minister revealed that sections of the contract, initially handled by Julius Berger PLC, had been reassigned to a reputable contractor to accelerate progress.
The visit included notable figures such as the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi; the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, Senator Mpigi Barinada; and the Chairman of the House Committee on Works, Hon. Akinola Alabi, alongside other senior officials.
President Tinubu’s Determination to Deliver Results
Minister Idris emphasized President Tinubu’s resolve to ensure the project is completed without delays:
“The President is deeply committed to completing the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road project within record time. We cannot afford to wait three more years for this critical road. Contractors will not be allowed to hinder progress. The Minister of Works and his team have set a target of 14 months for completion, and the energy and determination displayed by everyone involved give us confidence that this goal will be met.”
The Minister urged critics to set aside political differences and focus on the national importance of the project, describing it as a major artery linking Abuja, Kano, and other northern states.
Challenges Resolved for Timely Completion
Minister Idris disclosed that the original three-year timeline proposed by Julius Berger PLC was rejected by President Tinubu, who directed the reassignment of the project with a revised 14-month deadline.
The project has been segmented into three sections for better efficiency, and adjustments have been made to ensure its timely delivery. According to the Minister of Works, Senator Umahi, negotiations with Julius Berger lasted 14 months due to the company’s demand to increase the contract sum from ₦797 billion to ₦1.5 trillion and extend the timeline to three years.
New Additions to Enhance the Road Project
During the visit, Senator Umahi announced that the Ministry of Works had received a “No Objection” approval for a contract sum of ₦252.89 billion from the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP). The proposal is set for ratification at the next Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.
Umahi also highlighted additional features incorporated into the project, including:
- A 10.6-kilometer extension at the Kano axis to connect Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport.
- A 5-kilometer extension toward Kogi State.
- Full solar light installation along the expressway to prepare it for operation and maintenance concessioning.
Commitment to Accountability
Minister Idris commended Senator Umahi and his team for their dedication to ensuring the project’s success. He reassured Nigerians that the Ministry of Works, with full support from President Tinubu, remains committed to delivering a brand-new, fully functional road connecting Abuja to Kano.
“Nigerians can hold the Ministry accountable for this project. The President has provided all the necessary support, and we are confident that the Abuja-Kano road will soon be a reality,” Idris concluded.
