Abaribe Challenges Legislative Procedure in Senate Debate
Abia South Senator, Eyinnaya Abaribe, asserted on Wednesday that Nigeria is not under dictatorship, following a heated exchange with Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, over a proposed bill.
During the Senate session, Abaribe sought to introduce a bill advocating for the immortalization of Humphrey Nwosu and recognition of June 12. However, Bamidele objected, citing Order 38 as grounds for dismissal.
Disagreeing with this ruling, Abaribe argued that senators should have the freedom to make personal explanations on their motions. In his words:
“Even if the Senate Leader says that it doesn’t follow, the fact remains that a senator who wishes to make a personal explanation must be allowed to do so. We are not under a dictatorship.”
Senate Leadership Responds to Abaribe’s Claim
Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, weighed in on the debate, emphasizing adherence to parliamentary rules. He pointed out inconsistencies in Abaribe’s approach, explaining that:
“We agreed that Abaribe would bring this motion under Order 41 and 51, but later he attempted to reintroduce it under Order 52. Such a shift contradicts our agreed procedure.”
Jibrin reaffirmed the need for transparency in legislative decisions, dismissing any claims of procedural bias.
