This devastating incident was confirmed by Abdullahi Baba Arah, the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA). The Fatal Incident The explosion occurred when a fuel tanker en route from Kaduna to Gwagwalada overturned at the junction, spilling its contents. Despite repeated warnings to maintain a safe distance, numerous residents gathered to scoop the fuel, leading to a catastrophic explosion. The aftermath was harrowing, with many lives lost, severe injuries inflicted, and properties worth millions of naira destroyed. Arah disclosed that 80 victims were interred in a mass grave at the Dikko Primary Health Care premises, while families claimed the remains of five individuals for private burials. One more victim succumbed to injuries at the healthcare center, bringing the death toll to 86. Emergency Response and Mass Burial The mass burial, organized collaboratively by NSEMA, Gurara local government officials, and community volunteers, began at 5 p.m. and extended until midnight. This somber event was necessitated by the scale of the disaster and the need to manage public health concerns. Injuries and Ongoing Medical Care In addition to the fatalities, 55 individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries. These victims are currently receiving medical attention at nearby healthcare facilities. NSEMA, alongside local authorities, continues to coordinate relief efforts and medical support for the injured.
