Key Political Talks on Opposition Alliance Approaching Conclusion
Salihu Lukman, the former North-West Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has disclosed that discussions regarding the formation of a unified opposition coalition to challenge the ruling APC in the 2027 general elections are in their concluding phase.
Lukman made this revelation on Monday while responding to Atiku Abubakar’s recent statement, which confirmed that opposition parties are working towards forming a strong alliance against the APC.
Opposition Coalition Talks at an Advanced Stage
According to Lukman, Abubakar’s statement has fueled a nationwide debate on the prospects of an opposition coalition. He clarified that while no final agreement has been reached, negotiations have progressed significantly.
A primary objective of these discussions is securing a collective commitment from opposition leaders to set aside personal political ambitions and focus on a unified strategy for the 2027 elections. Additionally, determining the political party that will serve as the coalition’s main platform remains a key consideration.
Challenges and Strategic Decisions Ahead
Lukman addressed concerns over internal disagreements, specifically those related to zoning arrangements within the coalition. However, he dismissed reports suggesting that such issues are delaying the process. He emphasized that candidate selection would only be finalized once a consensus is reached on the coalition’s party platform.
He further revealed that some coalition members had attempted to register new political parties, but their efforts were blocked by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Meanwhile, several smaller parties that failed to secure any electoral seats in the last election now face possible de-registration, limiting the coalition’s options.
Urgency in Finalizing the Coalition
Lukman warned that any further delay in forming the opposition coalition could result in Nigeria evolving into a de facto one-party system, where the ruling APC dominates without strong opposition. He urged political stakeholders and Nigerians to recognize the urgency of the situation, stressing that waiting until 2027 could lead to legal and structural setbacks that weaken the opposition’s chances.
